Summary
Today is a very special episode because if you had told me 10 years ago that I would be chatting to Steve McKnight on my own podcast, I would have never believed you.
Steve is a professional investor, media commentator and online entrepreneur. But he’s probably most famous in the FIRE community for his book “From 0 to 130 Properties in 3.5 Years”.
This was actually the second book about financial independence that I ever read and completely changed my life. Steve is one of three people who I’d consider as the most influential figures for me to come across throughout my investing journey so as you could imagine, this was a special episode for me personally.
Some of the topics we cover in today’s episode are:
- Burnout and seeking an alternative path (00:06:15)
- Investing in property (00:17:37)
- Vendor financing (00:20:51)
- Australia’s housing market is a Ponzi scheme (00:27:44)
- Online entrepreneurship (00:46:30)
- Finding meaning beyond financial independence (01:11:37)

Wow, this was a surprisingly disappointing episode. 😞 We honestly don’t need more talk about selling domains or captain fi style making money by creating spammy websites. Steve is not as humble as I thought. Sorry to be so negative, I was just really disappointed by this episode. I loved his books though
Hello Kane,
Thanks for taking the time to leave your feedback. I’m so pleased that you enjoyed my books, and I hope my latest one, Money Magnet, continues to meet the standard of the others.
We all tried very hard on the podcast to deliver relevant and interesting information, but it appears we haven’t delivered that for you on this occasion. I’m sorry that is the case.
If you could offer tips for how we could improve, or topics you would like to know more about, we can seek to do better in the future.
Wishing you every success,
Steve
I’m sorry to hear that Kane.
Making money online is a legit strategy but I do agree that there are plenty of spammy ad-sense websites getting around.
Wow what an amazing pod! One of the best. Great to hear his out of the box thinking across multiple areas of life.
Thank you for your feedback Tara. A lot of effort went into the interview, and hearing that you enjoyed it is a joy.
May all your investments be good ones.
Bye,
Steve
One of the earlier property spruikers, he made his fortune selling $15k ‘courses’ (& that’s year 2000 prices) !!!!
Hello Kamish,
I appreciate you pointing out that I have been educating investors for two decades. A quick websearch will indicate my reputation for delivering useful and profitable information.
Please allow me to clarify that no course I have ever offered was priced at $15,000.
You’ll be pleased to discover my new book is currently on special at Booktopia for about $25, and 100% of the royalties are donated. Hopefully you’ll be able to purchase a copy and profit from what I’ve written in it about how to attract and keep a fortune that counts.
All the best for a bright future,
Steve
I really enjoyed this one but more as reliving the early part of my journey when I was into property. I loved his books back in the day.
Sidebar. I need to make fun of you. If you were one of my mates in real life. Each time you mention London, lived in Europe or I worked at Deloite. You would get a punch in the arm. I don’t think you have been able to do pod in the last 2 years without telling every guest this at least once 😄
Hello Natgee,
Us Deloitte alumnis love to share old war stories, so forgive us our lamentations.
Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback and I am delighted you enjoyed the interview. Hopefully your investing progress back in the day has allowed you to set a firm wealth foundation upon which you can scale up to bigger and better things.
If you, or anyone else, have questions about topics raised in the episode please leave a comment and I will reply when time permits.
Sincerely,
Steve
🤣 Ahhhh you’re soooo right Natgee!
I always bring up one of those three… most of the time it’s all three 😅
Let’s see if I can get through a podcast without mentioning them at least once haha.
I’m glad you enjoyed it too. Steve’s journey is so interesting with many learning opportunities for other rest of us.
Thank you so much for this interview, the combination of my favorite two thing McKnight and FI! THere is so many opportunities out there, its all about taking action. Go Get it!
Thanks Jof 🙂
I’m glad you enjoyed the episode.
